What Equipment Do You Need for a Fashion Shoot in Mallorca?
Mallorca is an established destination for international fashion photography.
Beaches, mountain roads, fincas, hotels, swimming pools, traditional villages and the streets of Palma can provide completely different locations within relatively short travelling distances.
But the equipment required for a fashion shoot in Mallorca can vary enormously.
A small editorial might travel with a photographer, assistant and a couple of bags. A large advertising campaign can require several vans of lighting, grip, digital equipment and production support.
At Palma Equipment Rental, we’ve been supplying equipment to professional photographers and fashion productions in Mallorca since 2011.
So what actually goes onto a fashion shoot rental list?
The answer starts with the location and the images you’re trying to make.
Start With the Camera
Many photographers travel with their own camera.
Others prefer to rent locally, particularly when additional bodies, specialist lenses or medium-format systems are required.
Our camera inventory includes professional systems from Canon, Sony and Fujifilm, with lenses covering everything from wide location photography to portraits and longer focal lengths.
For fashion photography, Fujifilm GFX medium-format systems can provide the resolution and image quality required for high-end commercial work, while cameras such as the Canon EOS R5 provide a versatile option for productions combining stills and moving image.
Whatever the principal camera, we normally recommend thinking about backup.
A spare body sitting unused for the entire shoot might feel unnecessary.
Until the main camera stops working.
Controlling Mallorca’s Sun
For many exterior fashion shoots, lighting begins with the sun rather than a lamp.
Mallorca’s direct sunlight can be beautiful, but during the middle of the day it can also produce extremely hard shadows and high contrast.
One of the simplest solutions is diffusion.
A California Sunbounce Sunswatter allows an assistant to position diffusion above the model and move with the subject, making it particularly useful for fashion and editorial photography.
Palma Equipment Rental has 4×6 ft and 6×8 ft Sunswatter systems available.
For larger setups, 6×6, 8×8 and 12×12 frames allow much larger areas of sunlight to be controlled.
Reflectors can then be used to return some direction and contrast to the subject.
A Sunbounce Pro 6×4 ft reflector, for example, is a simple piece of equipment that can have an enormous effect on an exterior portrait.
Sometimes the solution is even simpler.
A black floppy or textile positioned close to the model can provide negative fill, removing unwanted reflected light and creating more shape.
On a bright Mallorca location, controlling existing light can often be more effective than immediately adding another lamp.
Adding Flash
When natural light isn’t enough, flash remains an important tool for fashion photography.
Our Profoto inventory includes Pro-10, B1X, B10X and B10X Plus systems, allowing the lighting package to be adapted to the scale and mobility of the production.
Battery-powered flash is particularly useful for shoots moving quickly between locations.
A B10X or B1X package can be repositioned without repeatedly rebuilding power distribution, while a Pro-10 provides substantially more output when the photographer needs to compete with strong daylight or use larger modifiers.
Modifiers are equally important.
Umbrellas, softboxes, grids, reflectors and diffusion all change the character and efficiency of the source.
The most powerful light isn’t automatically the best light.
The objective is to build the source the photographer wants while keeping the package practical for the location and crew.
When Fashion Also Means Video
Fashion productions increasingly require both stills and moving image.
A campaign might need the main photographs, short films, social content and behind-the-scenes material during the same production.
That changes the lighting list.
Flash may remain the photographer’s preferred source for the stills, while moving image requires continuous lighting.
High-output LED fixtures such as Aputure and Nanlux can provide enough output for serious location work, while smaller LEDs can be used for more subtle setups or hidden within locations.
Where possible, planning stills and moving-image requirements together can prevent two completely separate equipment packages from developing unnecessarily.
Grip: The Part of the List That Gets Big Quickly
A lighting list containing four fixtures can easily require considerably more than four stands.
There may be stands for reflectors, frames, flags and overhead diffusion, together with clamps, arms, sandbags and other grip.
For exterior shoots, the stands also need to be appropriate for the equipment being supported.
Mallorca can be windy.
A large diffusion frame or umbrella can create substantial force even in what initially feels like a manageable breeze.
This is one area where reducing the amount of equipment isn’t always the same as reducing the size of the rental list.
A safe, workable lighting setup needs the appropriate grip behind it.
The Digital Station
For professional fashion photography, the digital station has become an important part of the set.
A typical tethered workflow may include a MacBook Pro, Capture One, EIZO monitor, external SSD storage and the appropriate tethering equipment.
On larger productions, the monitor allows the photographer, art director, agency and client to see the images while leaving the digital technician free to manage the capture station.
Location introduces another consideration: sunlight.
Trying to judge exposure, colour and detail on a monitor sitting in direct Mediterranean sun is difficult regardless of how good the display is.
The digital station therefore needs shade, reliable power and somewhere practical to work.
And if the production moves, the digital station needs to move with it.
An equipment cart can be one of the least glamorous but most useful pieces of equipment on the shoot.
Location Power
A finca or hotel may have convenient mains power.
A beach or mountain location probably doesn’t.
Modern battery systems have made remote fashion shoots considerably easier.
Instagrid can provide up to 3600W of portable power, while EcoFlow systems provide flexible options for lighting, digital equipment, chargers and other electrical requirements.
For sustained high loads, traditional Honda generators remain useful.
The best power solution depends not only on wattage but also on how long the equipment needs to operate and how far the power source needs to travel from the vehicle.
If the shooting position is several hundred metres down a path, that can completely change which option makes sense.
Stylist Equipment Matters Too
Fashion shoots don’t run on cameras and lights alone.
Garments need to arrive on set, remain organised and look right when they’re photographed.
Steamers, rails, hangers, tables and other stylist equipment can therefore be just as essential as photographic equipment.
A professional garment steamer may not be the most exciting thing on a rental list, but discovering you need one when the model is already dressed is considerably less exciting.
This is why we recommend thinking about the rental as a complete production package rather than separate camera and lighting lists.
Three Example Fashion Shoot Packages
There isn’t a standard fashion package, but these examples show how quickly requirements can change depending on the scale of the production.
Small Editorial or Lookbook
A compact shoot might use a photographer’s own camera together with a small battery flash package, Sunswatter, reflector, a few C-stands and flags.
A MacBook Pro running Capture One can provide a simple tethered workflow.
The advantage is mobility.
A small crew can move relatively quickly between locations without spending half the day loading and unloading equipment.
Medium Fashion Production
A larger production might add additional Profoto heads and modifiers, a 6×8 Sunswatter, larger diffusion frames, more substantial grip and a complete digital station with an EIZO monitor.
Portable power such as Instagrid or EcoFlow may be added for remote locations.
Equipment carts also start to become particularly valuable as the amount of camera, lighting and digital equipment increases.
Large Advertising Campaign
A larger commercial production may require multiple lighting systems, Pro-10 flash, high-output continuous lighting for moving image, 12×12 frames and textiles, substantial grip, location power and a complete digital capture setup.
Stylist equipment, carts and transport also become part of the package.
At this scale, equipment selection becomes as much about logistics as technical specification.
The question isn’t simply whether a particular light can create the required result.
It’s whether the complete package can move between the day’s locations efficiently enough for the production schedule.
The Things That Get Forgotten
The expensive equipment normally makes it onto the rental list.
It’s the inexpensive things that have a habit of being forgotten.
Extension cables. Power strips. Schuko adapters. Sandbags. Clamps. Spare batteries. Chargers. Card readers. Reflectors. Flags. Equipment carts. Garment steamers.
None of them are particularly exciting.
Several of them can stop a shoot.
A good rental list isn’t simply a list of impressive equipment. It is a collection of everything required to make the equipment work when it reaches the location.
Think About Transport Before Finalising the List
Equipment occupies space surprisingly quickly.
Stands, frames, carts and textiles can take up considerably more room than cameras and lighting fixtures.
Before finalising a large fashion rental, it is worth considering how the equipment will actually travel.
Palma Equipment Rental can also supply a Renault Master L3H3 equipment van, providing substantial load space for larger packages.
Transport becomes particularly important when the production is moving between several Mallorca locations during the same day.
A beautifully organised equipment list isn’t much use if half of it doesn’t fit into the vehicle.
What Should You Send Us?
If you’re preparing a fashion shoot in Mallorca, the easiest starting point is simply to send us the rental list you already have.
It doesn’t need to match our inventory.
Send us the photographer’s preferred equipment, shoot dates and any information you have about the locations.
We can check availability and suggest appropriate alternatives where an exact item isn’t available.
If the list is still being developed, knowing the scale of the shoot, whether you’re working outside or inside, whether moving image is involved and whether the locations have mains electricity gives us a useful starting point.
