Shooting in Mallorca: A Professional Guide to Lighting Outdoor Photo & Video Locations

Mallorca’s natural light is one of the reasons the island is such a popular destination for photography and film productions. Long sunny days, open landscapes, beaches, mountains and a wide variety of locations give photographers and cinematographers enormous possibilities.

That doesn’t necessarily make Mallorca easy to light.

Strong Mediterranean sunlight, rapidly changing sun angles, wind and locations without access to mains electricity can make a seemingly simple exterior shoot surprisingly demanding.

For professional productions, the solution is often less about adding more light and more about controlling the light that is already there.

Based in Palma de Mallorca, Palma Equipment Rental supplies professional lighting, grip, diffusion, reflectors and location power equipment for photo and video productions throughout Mallorca.

Here are some of the things worth considering when planning an exterior shoot on the island.

Working With Mallorca’s Sun

On a clear day, direct sunlight in Mallorca can be extremely hard.

During the middle of the day, this can create deep shadows under eyes, high contrast between direct sun and shade and uncomfortable conditions for talent.

The simplest solution is often diffusion.

Placing diffusion between the sun and the subject creates a larger, softer source while maintaining the natural direction of the sunlight. Depending on the size of the shot, this might mean anything from a handheld diffusion frame to a 6×6, 8×8 or 12×12 frame.

For larger fashion and advertising setups, overhead diffusion allows the subject to move within a much bigger controlled area.

But bigger isn’t automatically better.

A large frame on a windy Mallorca location can quickly become more of a problem than a solution. Frame size, stand choice, anchoring and the number of people available to control the equipment all need to be considered before deciding how large to go.

Sunswatter: A Fast Solution for Fashion and Editorial Shoots

One of our most useful tools for exterior photography is the California Sunbounce Sunswatter.

Rather than mounting diffusion on conventional stands, the Sunswatter places a lightweight diffusion screen above the subject on a boom. An assistant can then reposition it as the model, photographer or sun moves.

This makes it particularly useful for fashion, beauty and editorial shoots where the setup needs to remain mobile.

Palma Equipment Rental has 4×6 ft and 6×8 ft Sunswatter systems available in Mallorca.

The larger 6×8 provides a useful working area for full-length photographs, while the smaller version is easier to handle where space or wind is an issue.

For fast-moving productions, the ability to follow the subject rather than continually rebuilding a frame can save a considerable amount of time.

Using Reflectors to Bring the Sun Back In

Once direct sunlight has been diffused, the next step is often to return some direction and contrast to the image.

Reflectors are an extremely efficient way of doing this.

A California Sunbounce Pro 6×4 ft reflector, for example, can redirect existing sunlight back toward the subject without requiring additional electrical power.

Depending on the surface used, reflected sunlight can provide anything from subtle fill to a strong, directional source.

This can be particularly effective for fashion photography because you’re still working with the colour and intensity of the existing daylight.

Reflectors are also fast. An experienced assistant can continuously adjust the angle as the sun or subject moves rather than stopping the shoot to reposition a lamp.

Sometimes You Need Less Light, Not More

Adding light isn’t always the answer.

On bright exterior locations, photographers will often use negative fill to remove unwanted bounced light and create more shape in the face or subject.

Black textiles, floppies and flags can be positioned close to the subject to absorb ambient light coming from the ground, walls or surrounding environment.

This is particularly useful on pale locations where sunlight is bouncing from almost every direction.

White walls, sand, stone terraces and swimming-pool areas can effectively become enormous uncontrolled reflectors.

A black floppy positioned just outside the frame can sometimes have a greater effect on the image than adding another lamp.

Flash Against Daylight

There are situations where reflecting or modifying the sun isn’t enough.

Professional flash allows the photographer to introduce a controlled source powerful enough to compete with bright daylight.

For stills productions, Profoto Pro-10, B1X, B10X and B10X Plus systems provide different approaches depending on the scale and mobility of the shoot.

Battery-powered flash is particularly useful when the production needs to move quickly between locations.

Larger flash systems provide considerably more power but require additional consideration for power supply, stands, modifiers and transport.

Modifiers also make a major difference. A bare flash head can create a very different result from a Deep Umbrella, softbox or reflector.

When competing directly with the Mallorcan sun, efficiency matters. Large diffusion modifiers may produce beautiful light but can also reduce output significantly.

The entire lighting system needs to be considered rather than simply choosing the most powerful flash head.

LED Lighting for Exterior Shoots

Modern high-output LED fixtures have changed what is possible with continuous lighting on location.

Fixtures such as the Aputure 700X, Aputure 1200D and Nanlux Evoke 2400B can provide substantial output while retaining many of the practical advantages of LED lighting.

Fresnel attachments can further concentrate the output when a harder, more directional source is required.

Continuous lighting also gives photographers and cinematographers the advantage of seeing the effect directly.

For video productions this is obviously essential, but LEDs are increasingly useful on hybrid productions where stills and moving image need to be captured from the same lighting setup.

Smaller battery-powered LEDs can also be hidden inside locations, vehicles or architectural spaces where larger fixtures would be impractical.

Choosing Between Flash and LED

There isn’t one correct choice.

For still photography in very strong daylight, flash can provide enormous output for relatively compact equipment.

For video, LED or other continuous sources are necessary.

Hybrid productions may require a compromise or separate lighting approaches for different parts of the shoot.

The important question isn’t simply “Which light is brightest?”

It is how much output reaches the subject after modifiers, how far the fixture needs to be positioned from the shot, how it will be powered and how quickly the production needs to move.

A light that looks impressive on a technical specification sheet isn’t necessarily the most practical fixture halfway up a mountain.

Location Power: Battery or Generator?

Many of Mallorca’s most attractive locations have little or no convenient access to electricity.

Battery technology has made this considerably easier.

Portable systems such as Instagrid and EcoFlow can power a surprising amount of equipment without the noise, fumes and logistics associated with a petrol generator.

The Instagrid system, for example, can supply up to 3600W and is particularly useful when high-output power is required for relatively short periods.

For larger or longer-running setups, Honda generators remain an important option.

The right choice depends on the total load, length of the shoot, equipment being powered and whether sound is being recorded.

Whenever possible, calculate the complete electrical load before the shoot rather than discovering the limitations of the power source on location.

Wind Is Part of Your Lighting Plan

Wind deserves special attention in Mallorca.

A beautiful open location can become difficult very quickly when large diffusion frames, umbrellas or reflectors are involved.

A 12×12 textile isn’t just a lighting modifier. In strong wind, it is effectively a sail.

Larger frames require suitable stands, weight and experienced people to handle them safely. There are also conditions where the correct decision is simply to use something smaller.

A Sunswatter, smaller frame, reflector or different lighting approach may achieve 90% of the desired result with considerably less equipment and risk.

Checking the location and weather conditions before finalising the lighting package can therefore be just as important as checking the camera list.

Three Typical Mallorca Exterior Lighting Setups

For a small editorial or fashion shoot, a practical package might consist of a Sunswatter, Sunbounce reflector, a couple of flags, C-stands and a battery-powered Profoto system. The entire setup remains relatively mobile and can move quickly between locations.

For a medium commercial production, we might add larger diffusion frames, additional textiles, high-output flash or LED, combo stands, more substantial grip and portable battery power.

For a larger advertising or moving-image production, 12×12 frames, high-output LED or HMI lighting, generators or high-capacity battery systems, substantial grip and additional light-control textiles may be required.

There is no universal Mallorca lighting package. The right equipment depends on the location, shot size, time of day, weather, crew and the look the photographer or director wants to achieve.

Plan the Lighting Around the Location

One of the biggest advantages of planning equipment locally is being able to adapt the package to the realities of shooting in Mallorca.

A beach shoot, mountain road, finca, hotel terrace and Palma rooftop may all require completely different approaches even if the creative brief looks similar.

Access is also important.

Before ordering large stands, frames, generators and lighting fixtures, consider where the vehicles can actually stop and how far the equipment needs to travel from the road to the shooting position.

Sometimes the best lighting solution isn’t the biggest package. It is the package that can actually reach the location and move fast enough to keep up with the production.
